Retail AI Trading Lacks Fiduciary Safeguards, Risks Rise
Schwab and Fidelity solved algorithmic investing for retail customers years ago. Disclosed methodology. Fiduciary obligation. Institution-controlled risk parameters. It works. What is happening now in Asia is structurally different, and not because the AI is smarter. Retail investors are connecting large language models directly to brokerage APIs, writing their own strategies in plain language, and letting the model execute. No institutional fiduciary. No audited algorithm. The customer becomes the strategy author, the risk manager, and the compliance officer simultaneously. A trading competition run by Nof1 at the end of 2025 handed eight leading AI models $10,000 each to trade U.S. tech stocks for two weeks. Only 6 of 32 attempts produced positive returns. Fidelity Go does not lose money on 26 out of 32 attempts. The difference is not the model. It is who controls the model. The regulatory frameworks in Hong Kong, Singapore, and China were written for licensed institutions. None of them have a mechanism for the retail customer who has become the institution. The real question for financial services leaders: if your firm offers both a regulated intelligent portfolio product and open API access that lets customers route around it, which liability framework covers the second path? https://t.co/cHcCLZpT7x #FinancialServices #AIStrategy #EnterpriseAI #RetailInvesting #Fintech
