Summary

The Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) announced a joint initiative to embed artificial intelligence (AI) learning in selected pilot institutions across six states.

The pilot will roll out digital facilities to 3,000 students in Kedah, Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak and Penang, covering both mainstream and Islamic colleges. The curriculum is designed to go beyond rote certification, focusing on AI tools, critical thinking and digital innovation.

Officials stressed that education should “make us think” and enable students to evaluate information, quoting the speaker: “It’s not just about certificates, it’s about thinking and questioning.” The program reflects a broader push to align Malaysia’s talent pipeline with the global AI race.

If successful, the scheme could accelerate Malaysia’s transition to a knowledge‑based economy, attract tech investment, and help the country emerge as a regional hub for AI talent, supporting long‑term economic competitiveness.

Original Description

The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) will collaborate to introduce AI-based learning facilities at selected pilot institutions nationwide, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Speaking at the Himpunan Anak Pahang MADANI in Kuantan, Pahang on Friday (April 3), Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, emphasised that education should go beyond certificates and degrees, aiming instead to cultivate individuals capable of rational thinking and wise evaluation of information.
