Why It Matters

Framing polarization and misinformation as symptomatic of a deeper cultural and spiritual disruption reframes responses toward community-based, truth-rooted practices rather than only technical fixes, influencing how organizations and leaders might address social cohesion and information integrity. Understanding this perspective can inform policy, community resilience strategies, and corporate communications in a digitally fragmented environment.

Summary

A speaker draws on Indigenous worldview to argue that a disruptive force—described as the ‘trickster’—uses illusion, delusion and deception to create separation and undermine collective flourishing. They contend modern information channels, especially social media and news, amplify this trickster effect by distorting reality and driving division. The speaker urges spiritual practice, grounding in Earth and community, and ceremonies to resist those forces and to remember shared interconnectedness and dignity. The message frames current social fragmentation as both a spiritual and informational problem with cultural remedies rooted in Indigenous knowledge.

Original Description

During our recent Little Singer gathering, Pat McCabe shared a perspective that challenged the line many modern cultures draw between myth and reality.
A Diné ceremonial leader, artist, mother, grandmother, and lifelong advocate for Earth-based ways of knowing, Pat spoke about the stories Indigenous peoples carry, often categorized by the West as "folklore or metaphor". She speaks to the deep truths held by these visions that help us navigate the world.
The stories teach that these energies, like the trickster,  have always existed. They have a role. They stir the mind. They test discernment. They create the illusion of separation.
She reminded us not to mistake their visibility for their dominance.
What fills our screens is not necessarily what fills the world.
The media may amplify conflict until it appears to be everything. But beneath the noise, there are countless acts of care, cooperation, prayer, and relationship happening every day.
The trickster may be loud.
But it is not the whole story.
