The modernization dramatically improves connectivity, unlocking growth for Ethiopia’s digital services and narrowing the urban‑rural gap. It positions the nation as a competitive market for telecom investment and technology adoption.
Ethiopia’s telecom sector has long grappled with aging infrastructure and limited reach beyond major cities. By partnering with Ericsson, Ethio Telecom taps into a global leader’s expertise to fast‑track a three‑year Next Horizon Strategy that emphasizes network densification and technology refresh. The agreement, unveiled at MWC Barcelona, signals a decisive shift toward a more resilient, high‑capacity mobile backbone capable of supporting emerging digital services.
The rollout targets 1,500 mobile sites, injecting 2.8 million new 4G capacity and lifting total LTE capacity to 4.1 million. Upgrading 502 legacy 3G nodes to 4G and extending LTE to an additional 157 towns brings overall population coverage to 85 %, with a 45 % boost in rural reach across 75 underserved areas. This expanded coverage underpins national platforms such as telebirr, ZemenGebeya and Znexus, enabling faster transactions, e‑commerce growth, and broader financial inclusion.
Beyond immediate connectivity gains, the project positions Ethiopia as a regional hub for digital innovation. Enhanced mobile bandwidth attracts foreign direct investment, supports cloud and edge computing initiatives, and lays groundwork for a future 5G rollout. As the country’s digital economy scales, the modernized network will be a critical enabler for sectors ranging from agriculture to manufacturing, reinforcing Ethiopia’s competitiveness in the East African market.
