Why It Matters

The contract bolsters the Baltic region’s offshore wind capacity, advancing EU clean‑energy goals and creating a new revenue stream for Greek cable manufacturers.

Key Takeaways

  • •Hellenic Cables secures 70 km offshore wind cable contract
  • •Project supplies 66 kV inter‑array cables for 390 MW farm
  • •Manufacturing will occur in Corinth, Greece, finishing 2027
  • •DEME and Ocean Winds partner to accelerate Baltic offshore expansion
  • •Contract underscores EU push for renewable energy infrastructure

Pulse Analysis

The Baltic Sea is emerging as a strategic hub for offshore wind, driven by ambitious EU renewable targets and favorable wind resources. Developers are racing to secure the specialized infrastructure needed to connect turbines, and inter‑array cables are a critical component that directly impacts project reliability and cost. Hellenic Cables, a seasoned player in submarine power transmission, is leveraging its engineering expertise to meet these demands, positioning Greece as a key supplier in the broader European supply chain.

Under the DEME‑Ocean Winds agreement, Hellenic Cables will design, test and produce approximately 70 km of 66 kV submarine cable, including spares and accessories. Production will take place at the company's modern facility in Corinth, benefitting from recent automation upgrades that reduce lead times and enhance quality control. The timeline, targeting completion by late 2027, aligns with the BC‑Wind project’s construction schedule, ensuring that cable delivery does not become a bottleneck for turbine installation.

Beyond the immediate project, the contract signals a shift toward greater diversification of offshore wind supply chains across Europe. By awarding a Greek firm a major Baltic contract, developers demonstrate confidence in cross‑border collaboration and the ability of Southern European manufacturers to meet stringent offshore standards. This could open doors for Hellenic Cables to pursue additional contracts in the North Sea and Atlantic regions, while reinforcing the EU’s broader strategy of building a resilient, localized renewable infrastructure ecosystem.

Hellenic Cables nets BC-Wind cable contract

Hellenic Cables has been awarded a contract by DEME for the supply of inter‑array cables for Ocean Winds’ 390 MW BC‑Wind project in the Polish Baltic Sea.

Under the contract, Hellenic Cables will be responsible for the design, engineering, manufacturing, testing, and supply of approximately 70 km (including spares) of 66 kV inter‑array submarine cables, as well as the supply of the associated cable accessories.

The cables will be produced at Hellenic Cables’ manufacturing facility in Corinth, Greece, with completion of production expected by the end of 2027.

Philip Scheers, General Manager Cables at DEME, said:

“DEME and Hellenic Cables have consistently demonstrated effective collaboration across multiple offshore wind projects. We anticipate that our shared expertise and commitment to excellence will lead to a safe and successful execution of the BC‑Wind project.”

Kostas Savvakis, General Manager of Hellenic Cables, stated:

“Our collaboration with DEME and Ocean Winds on the BC‑Wind project reflects our proven capability to deliver high‑quality cable solutions, supporting the energy transition in the Baltic region.”

Pete Geddes, BC‑Wind Project Director at Ocean Winds, said:

“The selection of Hellenic Cables for the inter‑array cables package marks another important milestone for the BC‑Wind project as we progress through the construction phase.

Their proven expertise in delivering high‑quality submarine cable systems, combined with our close cooperation with DEME, will be key to ensuring the reliable and timely execution of this offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea.”
