Why It Matters

The change safeguards early supporters' pricing but exposes the volatility of Kickstarter deposit models, influencing consumer confidence in tech crowdfunding.

Key Takeaways

  • Deposit holders receive price‑match refunds regardless of checkout price.
  • Limited stock and supply chain issues drive purchase method overhaul.
  • Refunds processed May 1‑15 for successful Kickstarter orders.
  • Non‑order deposit refunds issued via PayPal after campaign.
  • Community backlash underscores need for clearer crowdfunding communication.

Pulse Analysis

UGREEN’s IDX6011 AI NAS entered the market with ambitious promises: on‑device artificial intelligence, private cloud storage, and a suite of voice‑controlled apps. Positioned as a competitor to established players like Synology and QNAP, the device targets small businesses and power users seeking local AI processing without relying on third‑party clouds. Early reviews highlighted its robust Intel Celeron processor, up to 64 GB RAM, and integrated SSD options, making it a compelling proposition for edge‑computing workloads such as image recognition and automated backups.

Amid soaring demand, UGREEN confronted a supply bottleneck that forced a pivot from its original secret‑reward link to a deposit‑based pricing model. By requiring a $30 deposit and matching the email at checkout, the company guarantees the pre‑agreed price—$1,559 for the Pro, $1,199 for 64 GB, and $999 for 32 GB—regardless of the listed Kickstarter price. Successful backers will receive any price‑difference refunds between May 1‑15, 2026, while those who miss the ordering window will be reimbursed via PayPal. This approach aims to protect early supporters but has sparked criticism on Reddit, where users accuse UGREEN of opaque communication and shifting the risk onto deposit holders.

The episode underscores a broader lesson for tech crowdfunding: transparent pricing and clear refund policies are essential to maintain backer trust. As AI‑enabled NAS devices gain traction, manufacturers must balance hype with realistic supply chain planning. Prospective buyers should weigh the device’s technical merits against the uncertainty revealed by the deposit saga, and consider alternative vendors with established fulfillment records before committing to future Kickstarter campaigns.

UGREEN OFFICIAL RESPONSE
Hi, there. We have simplified everything below so you know exactly what to expect:
Why the Method of Purchase Changed
Demand has been much higher than we initially expected, and at the same time, the units available are still very limited due to supply chain constraints. Because of this, no matter which purchase method is used, we may not be able to meet all demand.
We are no longer using a secret reward link, since this approach comes with the risk that if it were shared publicly, users without a deposit could still get the 40% discount. To better protect deposit users’ benefits, we will now offer the discount via a price difference refund. This change ensures that only deposit holders get priority access to limited stock.
No matter what price you pay during checkout, if you successfully secure a unit on a first-come, first-served basis and use the same email address as your deposit, your final price will always match your reserved deposit price:
• iDX6011 Pro → $1,559
• iDX6011 (64GB) → $1,199
• iDX6011 (32GB) → $999
On Kickstarter, you may see different prices (for example: limited early bird, or standard price). These are standard Kickstarter reward tiers, not price increases targeted at you.
As long as you secure a unit and your email matches your deposit record, your reserved price is guaranteed.
How refunds work (2 scenarios)
Scenario 1: If you successfully place an order on Kickstarter
1. From March 24 to April 23, 2026, go to Kickstarter and place your order (at the listed price at that moment)
2. Refunds will be paid out between May 1 and May 15, 2026. This includes:
* The price difference (if any)
* Your $30 deposit
3. Refunds will be sent back to your original payment method
Important: Your Kickstarter purchase must use the same email address used to place your deposit on nas.ugreen.com, in order to match them correctly.
Scenario 2: If you do NOT place an order
1. After the campaign ends on April 23, 2026, you’ll receive an email asking for your PayPal account
2. Submit your PayPal information within 14 working days
3. After submission closes, we will initiate your $30 deposit refund within 1–7 working days
4. The refund will be sent to your PayPal account (from UGREEN)
We truly appreciate your support and patience. We are doing everything we can to make sure deposit holders get priority access.
