The launch demonstrates Square Enix’s continued dominance in Japan’s RPG market and highlights the importance of multi‑platform releases for maximizing sales, influencing console manufacturers’ strategies.
Dragon Quest’s cultural cachet in Japan remains unrivaled, and the latest reimagining of the series capitalized on that legacy. By delivering a polished remake that respects the original’s narrative while adding modern visuals, Square Enix tapped a multigenerational fan base eager for nostalgia and new content alike. The resulting 456,552 physical units sold in a single week not only eclipsed competing titles but also reinforced the franchise’s status as a revenue engine that can drive retail performance across multiple hardware ecosystems.
The multi‑platform launch strategy proved decisive. By releasing simultaneously on Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, and PlayStation 5 (including the Pro variant), Square Enix ensured the game occupied the top three slots on the weekly software chart. This approach amplified total unit sales and highlighted the competitive dynamics between Sony and Nintendo. While the Switch 2 retained its lead in console shipments, the PS5’s strong showing demonstrates that flagship titles can still sway hardware demand, especially when they appeal to both legacy and next‑gen audiences.
For Square Enix, the surge translates into a robust short‑term earnings boost and validates continued investment in flagship IPs. The disparity between physical and digital figures suggests a lingering collector mindset in Japan, yet the growing digital PS5 sales hint at a gradual shift. Looking ahead, the success of DQ7 Reimagined may encourage other publishers to adopt aggressive, cross‑platform rollouts, while console makers will likely double down on exclusive features to capture similar blockbuster momentum.

It’s well‑documented that Japan loves Dragon Quest, and that continues to prove itself true with the most recent game.
Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined was last week’s best‑selling physical game in the country by a landslide. With different platform versions taking up the top three spots on the chart, the total sold comes to 456,552, per Famitsu estimates (thanks, Gematsu). This figure doesn’t include digital sales.
The next best‑selling game is Nioh 3, which managed less than 10 % of DQ7’s sales at 40,570 physical copies sold. Obviously, it’s only on one platform, so it’s not a great comparison, but any game would struggle to measure up to Square Enix’s RPG series.
On the hardware side, PS5 (including PS5 Pro) has once again outsold Switch 1, but the Switch 2 continues its winning streak.
