The album is Taylor’s first full‑length release since 2023, reviving indie‑folk momentum and generating significant ticket‑sale potential across key U.S. markets.
Hiss Golden Messenger has become a staple of modern Americana, with M.C. Taylor’s lyrical storytelling earning critical acclaim since the project’s inception in 2007. After the 2023 effort Jump for Joy, which solidified the band’s reputation for blending soulful introspection with genre‑bending arrangements, fans have awaited the next evolution. I’m People arrives at a moment when indie folk is experiencing a resurgence, driven by streaming playlists that favor authentic, narrative‑driven music. Taylor’s decision to partner with Chrysalis signals a strategic move toward broader distribution while retaining artistic control.
The album’s lead single, “In the Middle of It,” sets a tone of expansive desert wanderings and late‑night radio mystique, echoing the cultural fascination with road narratives and fringe media. Across its twelve tracks, the record weaves acoustic guitar, pedal steel, and subtle electronic textures, suggesting a deliberate push beyond traditional folk boundaries. This hybrid approach aligns with current industry trends where genre fluidity attracts both legacy listeners and younger audiences seeking fresh sonic palettes, positioning I’m People as a potential crossover catalyst.
The accompanying fall tour underscores the commercial calculus behind the release. Spanning major venues from Denver’s Ogden Theatre to New York’s Irving Plaza, the itinerary targets markets with strong vinyl and live‑music consumption. By aligning tour dates with the album’s launch window, the band maximizes promotional momentum, driving merchandise sales and streaming spikes. For the indie‑folk sector, Taylor’s dual focus on new material and extensive touring exemplifies a sustainable model that leverages both digital reach and the enduring appeal of intimate concert experiences.

A new Hiss Golden Messenger album is on its way. M.C. Taylor will share I’m People on May 1 via Chrysalis. He’s also set to tour the record across the United States in the fall. Listen to lead single “In the Middle of It” below.
In press materials, Taylor said “In the Middle of It” was inspired by “Highway 10 through the desert towns, Los Angeles to El Paso … Art Bell's Coast to Coast droning from a bunker in the middle of Nevada. Ghosts and UFOs and vagabonds. The engine sings out over the long lightning fields. In the middle of it: the country, the story, the relationships.”
