EU Moves Forward on Trade Deal with US
The European Union announced on May 20 that it will implement tariff reductions agreed in the 2025 EU‑U.S. joint statement, eliminating duties on most U.S. industrial goods and granting preferential access for U.S. seafood and certain agricultural products. The deal also suspends tariffs on lobster imports, including processed lobster. A dedicated safeguard mechanism lets the EU re‑impose duties if imports threaten domestic producers. The agreement builds on the Trump administration’s 2025 trade proposal that set a 15% U.S. tariff on EU goods while the EU offered zero tariffs on many U.S. items.
