Startup Ecosystem Systematized, Scaling Far Beyond Population Growth
Lotta folks commenting that this chart is an indictment of the progress of "startup science." I think it's the opposite. Since 2010 you've had a 7-10xing of seed rounds and a 3.5-7xing of A rounds. The US population has only grown by 9% in that period. Tech entrepreneurship has become "legible" to a dramatically larger population who are not just starting up, but also being initially capitalized (seed) and surviving into beginning scale (A). My view is this is a direct outcome of the systematization of the craft of tech entrepreneurship thanks to accelerators like YC, the seed market, pioneered by First Round Capital, and canonical texts like The Lean Startup, The Mom Test, Founding Sales, and more. The ecosystem is getting MUCH better at finding market opportunities, fitting technical solutions to them, and taking the results to market, successfully.
