CHART: EV Battery Metals Index Jumps to 27-Month High

The EV battery metals index surged to a 27‑month high as December’s raw‑material spend topped $2 billion, the first such level since August 2023. Global passenger EV sales likely passed 30 million units in 2025, driving a 25% increase in deployed battery capacity and pushing total battery‑metal demand toward a 1 TWh annual threshold. Prices for lithium, nickel and cobalt have accelerated, with cobalt sulphate up over 200% YoY, while LFP chemistry now accounts for roughly half of global capacity, led by China’s 83% share. Despite a still‑lower overall spend than the 2022 peak, the market outlook for 2026 is markedly stronger.
