US Lifts Iran Oil Sanctions, but Supply Stays Scarce
US suspends Iran oil sanctions for a month, allowing sale of all barrels on water as of March 20. Another band-aid. There are no more than 30 million barrels of Iranian oil in floating storage waiting for buyers, as per ship-tracking data. Under US sanctions, Iran has only been exporting what it calculates China can and will absorb - averaged over a period of time. China has not been consistent in the volumes it absorbs, with decisions impacted by a) competitive value of Iran oil vs available discounted Russian and Venezuelan crude and b) occasionally, opportunistic pivot away from Iranian oil when in the throes of trade talks with the US. However, the bottom line is that averaged over a period of time, Iran has more or less shipped what China is likely to absorb. Second, if Iran is getting this dispensation because supply is tight and crude is on the boil, does it raise or lower Tehran’s incentive to let more tankers pass through Hormuz — with or without its permission. https://t.co/BuK8x5TEsT
