$META up nearly 3% premarket on reports of 20%+ workforce cuts while carrying $115B-$135B in AI capex guidance for 2026. Markets are reading this as margin discipline, not distress. They're probably right. This is a replay of the 2022 "Year of Efficiency" playbook. Meta shed headcount, the stock rerated dramatically higher, and Zuckerberg used the leaner cost structure to accelerate the AI infrastructure build. The market rewarded the combination of cost cuts AND conviction spending. That's happening again, at larger scale. A few things I've been saying for a while that I think matter here: 1/ The AI capex is not a bet. It's a strategy. Zuckerberg is doing with open source AI what Meta did with Open Compute: democratizing infrastructure to prevent OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft from locking up the market. $115B-$135B in 2026 capex is that strategy fully funded. 2/ Be skeptical of layoffs attributed to AI. I said this about Block's cuts in February and I'll say it again: when Jack Dorsey lays off 40% of staff "due to AI" after hiring thousands during the pandemic, that is the dog ate my homework AI blame game. Some of Meta's headcount correction is structural cleanup from overhiring. Some may be real AI-driven productivity. The stock market doesn't care about the reason. It cares about the margin math. 3/ What most people are missing: Meta is spending aggressively in part because its model strategy stumbled. Llama 4 looked good on benchmarks but underperformed in production. Behemoth was shelved. Zuckerberg was frustrated enough to spend $14.3B on Scale AI and poach its CEO to run a new Superintelligence unit. This is not the posture of a company that has it all figured out. It's a company with enormous resources throwing everything at a problem it hasn't solved yet. 4/ The four hyperscalers are collectively planning nearly $700B in AI infrastructure spend this year. Challenger Gray & Christmas tallies over 12,000 AI-related job cuts in the U.S. already in 2026. These trends are moving in parallel. The build-out requires capital concentration, and capital concentration requires workforce rationalization. The AMD-Meta deal I covered in February tells you where the infrastructure dollars are actually going. A $100B, 6-gigawatt, multi-generation commitment: custom AMD Instinct GPUs based on the MI450 chiplet architecture, EPYC Venice CPUs, and Helios rack-scale systems co-developed through OCP. First gigawatt is a binding purchase commitment, with the remaining 5GW contingent on milestones. This is deeply architected, multi-vendor infrastructure, not vague AI spending. Bottom line: Meta is running the same efficiency-then-investment playbook that worked in 2022, just with higher stakes, a less proven AI model strategy, and a clearer infrastructure thesis behind it. The market loves this combination. Whether the models catch up to the infrastructure is the question nobody is asking. https://t.co/cudwj4mSdM
