Mercury Redefines Startup Banking with Direct Bank Partnerships
New Fintech Blueprint podcast episode with Immad Akhund (@immad), founder and CEO of @mercury , and you'll definitely want to take some notes. Mercury grew up through the period when the Banking-as-a-Service middleware layer was falling apart. Synapse, Unit, and Bond were the rails for the 2019 to 2021 neobank wave, and most of that model is gone. Months before Synapse's April 2024 collapse, Mercury had already moved off and rebuilt on direct bank partnerships. Column and Lead began emerging as the new infrastructure layer for that wave. A few things that that stuck with me during our convo. 40% of US early-stage startups bank with Mercury, in $650 M annual revenue, three years of profitability. Personal banking launched in December, lending is expanding, and a national bank charter application is in. Immad frames Mercury as a financial operating system for businesses. Deposits as the entry point, then invoicing, bill pay, spend management, eventually underwriting. SMB banking is a $2 trillion market, so 40% of startups is the cheap acquisition wedge into something much bigger. He also pushes back on the idea that stablecoins quietly fix reconciliation. Most providers pool customer funds into shared wallets and run their own internal ledgers, which recreates the same issues. The benefit only holds when users actually hold their own keys, and almost no consumer fintech runs that way. Full episode is up on your favorite podcast player.
