Smartphone Ultrasound May Aid Spine Diagnosis, If Cost‑Effective
Smartphone-connected ultrasound devices could bring an interesting new layer to spinal diagnostics. A system like SpineUs combines a handheld ultrasound scanner with tracking software and AI-based reconstruction to create 3D visualizations of the spine’s surface in near real time. According to Verdure Imaging’s FDA 510(k) summary, the system is intended to assist trained chiropractors and radiologists in acquiring, viewing, and measuring ultrasound images of the spine, and to function as an adjunct to conventional imaging rather than a standalone basis for patient management decisions. The downside? As always, cost. Even if these systems are connected to smartphones, that does not automatically make them low-cost or widely deployable. So, I'm afraid, their value will depend not only on technical performance, but on whether they can reduce costs and decrease unnecessary imaging.
