Analysts Overstate Global Copper Supply by Ignoring Strategic Reserves
I am seeing many market analysts include the accumulated copper stockpiles in the US in their global balance of copper stockpiles and therefore conclude that there are >1 million tonnes of available copper in global stockpiles today. I am not sure that is correct... At the end of 2025, there were around 520,000 tonnes of copper in stock in the USA, vs 85,000 at the end of 2024. In today’s world, I am certain the US government would step in if these US-based copper stocks were shipped out. Therefore, for me, they are gone from the market and not freely available. The US is not the only government stockpiling copper. China has a strategic stockpile of 3 months of use and therefore there is further scope for them to buy. I suspect restocking by the SRB will likely be the key theme in this 15th Five-Year Plan, which is set to be approved next month.
