Camper Van Beethoven? Our future A&R guy couldn't quite convince the bosses at the label to sign us, but coincidentally the two top radio promo guys accidentally went to a Camper Van Beethoven show on mushrooms. We were playing in this decrepit downtown LA theatre. We had The Whitefronts playing horns with us. They had painted themselves white with body paint they found backstage and posed motionless on the stack of speakers. The crowd thought they were mannequins. When we hit the first stop they stood up and played the guitar riff on horns. The two radio guys had their mnds blown. They sided with the AR guy and we were shortly thereafter signed to Virgin US.
