For decades, digital advertising has trained marketers to optimize for interruption. You buy attention, compress a message into a few characters, and hope the click carries enough intent to survive the landing page. That model works when discovery and evaluation are separate steps. ChatGPT collapses them into a single moment. The most important change is that ads now live inside an active reasoning context. When someone sees an ad in ChatGPT, they are already trying to solve something. The ad is adjacent to thought, not distraction. That changes everything about what “good” looks like. First, relevance is no longer demographic or behavioral. It is situational. Ads are triggered by the current conversation, not by who the user is in aggregate. That means your positioning has to map cleanly to a job someone is actively doing. Vague brand narratives will struggle here. Clear problem-solution alignment will win. Second, the click is no longer the primary unit of value. ChatGPT frames ads as something you can ask questions about. The real conversion surface is the follow-up interaction: Can your product withstand scrutiny when someone interrogates it in real time? Can it answer “Is this right for me?” without collapsing into marketing fluff? If not, the ad becomes a liability. Third, creative shifts from persuasion to usefulness. In this environment, the best-performing ads will behave more like tools than messages. Think diagnostics, comparisons, calculators, or scoped recommendations. Ads that help someone decide faster will outperform ads that try to sound clever. Fourth, trust becomes measurable, not abstract. OpenAI is drawing a hard line between answers and ads. Users are told their conversations are not sold to advertisers. Marketers cannot rely on dark patterns or implied endorsement by the system. If users dismiss your ad or ask why they are seeing it, that feedback loop will matter. Expect relevance penalties to feel closer to product feedback than brand lift studies. Fifth, this favors companies with real product clarity. If your internal positioning is fuzzy, it will be exposed quickly. Conversational ads surface edge cases, objections, and mismatch instantly. Teams that already invest in sharp ICP definition, honest FAQs, and clear trade-offs will compound faster than teams optimized for vague top-of-funnel reach. Finally, this is a latency game. The winning ads will shorten the time between a question and a confident next step. If your ad requires a context switch, a long read, or deferred payoff, it will lose to something that resolves uncertainty inside the chat. ChatGPT ads are about earning participation at the exact moment someone is thinking. Marketers who treat this like another display unit will get mediocre results. Marketers who treat it like a product surface, designed for clarity under interrogation, will build an edge that compounds.
