Truckloads Surge as LTL Consolidates in Freight Recovery
The Cass Shipment index is an important barometer of freight activity, but there are some important nuances. The freight market had been in one of the biggest recessions in history. But in late November, we saw a surge of activity that has continue to increase ever since. So how can the Cass Shipment index continue to weaken? The Cass Shipment index has a higher concentration of LTL shipments to truckload. As the goods economy recovers, shippers get bigger orders and consolidate LTL shipments into full truckloads. This consolidation is what you’d expect to see on the front end of a recovery, as companies start ramping production. LTL is a laggard in a recovering market, with truckload (esp Flatbed) happening first. The economic panic about freight should have been two years ago when the market was collapsing. We are now in recovery and it is beautiful to watch.
