The credential ecosystem has entered “escape velocity,” with Open Badges exploding from 74 million to over 320 million in two years and the United States now tracking roughly 1.85 million distinct credentials from more than 134 thousand issuers. This shift moves recognition from scarce, institution‑centric degrees to a distributed network of micro‑credentials, certificates and badges that signal learning in‑journey. While the proliferation promises finer‑grained evidence of skills and greater mobility, it also creates a new bottleneck: interpreting and comparing an ever‑growing set of signals. Policymakers and market participants must now focus on transparency, comparability and trust infrastructure to keep the system legible.
