Chinese AI Cuts China Emissions, Boosts US, Japan
China's CAS released an LLM for carbon emissions accounting. The model apparently reduces China's contributions to emissions but increases US and Japan's. Is it open source, has anyone looked at it to see how it differs? Wrapping this in increasing "discourse power" raises eyebrows: ------- Redefining the Global Carbon Map ...By using generative AI to reconstruct the carbon accounting paradigm, the model dynamically maps global carbon flow and traceability, significantly enhancing China’s scientific discourse power in global climate governance... ...The model has already produced a preliminary high-precision carbon holographic map at the national level. Using 2022 as a benchmark, the new scientific accounting system revealed significant adjustments compared to traditional IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) production-side results: China: Adjusted by -17.7% United States: Adjusted by +15.2% Japan: Adjusted by +7.2% Furthermore, the model found that the default emission factors used in the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) systematically overestimate the emission factors of Chinese products. It also precisely calculated the contribution of China’s green products to global emission reductions.
