Pregnancy Makes Your Heart Grow 30‑50% Larger
Your heart physically grows during pregnancy. It increases in mass by 30-50% to keep up with the extra blood your body is making. By the third trimester, your heart is pumping about 1.5 liters more blood per MINUTE than before you got pregnant. This is one of the reasons pregnant women get winded doing things that used to be easy. Walking up stairs, exercise, carrying your toddler, etc. Your heart is working harder than it ever has. After you give birth, your heart slowly returns to its original size, though it can take up to six months. Pregnancy changes almost every organ in your body and the heart is one of the most dramatic examples.
