AI‑empowered Patients Demand Smarter Clinician Collaboration
Patients are empowered by AI in a way they've never been before. This raises the bar for clinicians everywhere. I'm hearing from clinicians that their patients now come to clinic having done tremendous amounts of research on themselves and their conditions with AI. This is especially true for patients who are strong knowledge workers in other industries who have already leveraged AI to start understanding other domains. They can now leverage AI to understand their own health, a new level of health literacy amongst patients that we should all welcome. This new level of health literacy among patients creates an expectation that the AI knows everything that the patient knows from their AI research + a level of synthesis that goes beyond what the patient could have figured out with AI alone. This can be the beginning of a new era of patient-provider communication, but it does mean that clinicians more than ever need to embrace AI to augment, not just their scribing processes, but their research, review of patient records, and their clinical reasoning.
