Proximal Sound Prints Elastomer Microstructures Using Ultrasound

Proximal Sound Printing (PSP) is an ultrasound‑driven additive manufacturing technique that cures native PDMS at a localized barrier, achieving a practical feature size of 0.2 mm. The process reduces electrical input to roughly 5 W—four times less than its predecessor Direct Sound Printing—while boosting volumetric deposition to about 250,000 mm³ per hour. Researchers demonstrated functional microfluidic components, including Y‑channels and serpentine mixers, confirming that the printed parts meet design specifications. Multi‑material capability was also shown with pigment‑laden PDMS colloids, hinting at broader device functionality.
