'Digital Blood Testing' Now at Hand

A collaborative team led by UNSW and Nutromics has demonstrated a wearable patch that continuously measures vancomycin levels using DNA‑based aptamer sensors. Published in Nature Biotechnology, the pilot trial showed the patch can track drug concentration in interstitial fluid, offering a less invasive alternative to traditional blood draws. The researchers claim the core scientific and engineering challenges are solved, shifting focus to large‑scale clinical validation and regulatory approval. Ongoing ICU studies in Australia and a planned U.S. filing aim to bring the technology to market soon.
