This Week in AI Updates: Google’s UCP Standard, a Redesigned Slackbot, and More (January 16, 2026)

Google introduced the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open‑source standard that lets retailers, marketplaces and payment providers speak a common language for real‑time inventory, pricing and checkout within conversational interfaces. Salesforce rolled out the redesigned Slackbot, an out‑of‑the‑box AI agent that leverages Slack context to answer questions, schedule meetings and automate tasks. Kaggle launched Community Benchmarks, letting data scientists create and share custom evaluation suites, while Microsoft made its Copilot Studio extension generally available in VS Code for end‑to‑end agent development. Box unveiled Box Extract, an AI‑driven tool that parses unstructured documents into structured metadata, and Google released TranslateGemma, a suite of multilingual models optimized for edge, laptop and high‑performance cloud deployments.
