Infrared-Activated Hydrogel Uses Lysozyme 'Nets' To Combat Resistant Bacteria

Researchers at ETH Zurich and Shanghai University have created an infrared‑activated hydrogel that mimics neutrophil extracellular traps. The gel, built from egg‑white lysozyme fibers, releases active lysozyme and magnesium ions when exposed to near‑infrared light, killing resistant bacteria and calming inflammation. Pre‑clinical tests in mice and pigs showed a 95% reduction in MRSA load and accelerated wound closure within two weeks. The reversible protein network also supports tissue regeneration, positioning the material as a potential dual‑action therapy for chronic and post‑surgical wounds.
