AI Layoffs Risk Turning Companies Into Stranded Assets
Something worth remembering if you're trying to value the stock market right now: 👇 A corporation can only profit from human labor displacement once. If by engaging in that single cost saving to beef up your bottom line you inadvertently destroy the very market your company serves, that is not a logical executive action. It may be short-term profitable, but long-term it ends up being extremely value- destroying. What remains after AI corporate adoption must account for second-order effects and long-term market sustainability. Don't collapse your market. If all humans are now poorer, and can't afford to buy your products or services because they've all been displaced by AI, that single executive action turns your whole business into a stranded asset. It is a bad executive decision. What is needed is a mass market "Ford moment". That means realising you have to not only pay your workers enough to afford your own products, but also employ enough of them to ensure they have livelihoods and ongoing AGENCY to buy your products. The end result might be employing many people to press a button three times a week, like George Jetson. In that case, white-collar work becomes performative, but that's ok. A) because so much of it is already performative. And b) Because it's the human participation that creates the value. In the future, the primary value of a blue-collar human work will be feedback — aka showing an AI how humans are valuing, misinterpreting, amending or even ignoring AI output.
