Fail‑Safe PLCs Outpace Relays for Complex Automation
The new fail safe IOs for the Siemens Industry S7 1200 G2 are officially here 🚀 With the new fail safe signal module, Siemens significantly expands the Safety capabilities of the S7 1200 G2 platform. And this raises an interesting question for me 🤔 Does it still make sense today to implement machine safety purely with fail safe switching devices? The cost difference between a standard PLC and an F PLC is becoming smaller and smaller. At the same time, requirements for: • diagnostics • flexibility • remote service • fast machine modifications are constantly increasing. ⚙️ Small machines For simple conveyor systems or compact special purpose machines, classic safety relays can still make sense: • easy to understand • fast implementation • low engineering effort 🏭 More complex systems As soon as multiple safety zones, operating modes or robotics are involved, I see hardly any alternative to a fail safe PLC: • much better diagnostics • less wiring • easier scalability • significantly faster modifications Especially the new fail safe IOs for the S7 1200 G2 are shifting this boundary even further 💡 What is your experience?
