Autonomous Trucks Won’t Go Mainstream Until 2035‑40
The folks that believe autonomous trucks will suddenly just show up are the same people that believe that the Tesla Semi is going to be ubiquitous choice among fleets. The way consumers buy cars, is not the way that fleets buy trucks. They will want to test the new technology, phase in slowly, and then if it proves itself on a few metrics, then scale in: - Reliability - Total cost of ownership - Uptime - Efficiency (not promised by an OEM, but their own tests, for their own missions) - Residual value The replacement cycle is 3-5 years. Even if autonomous proves itself by 2030, it will be 2035-2040 before we see fleet-wide conversions. Human drivers have at least a decade, more likely 2.
