Accidental Pricing Call Sparked Teleport Enterprise Product
After 480 founder interviews, my favorite pricing story: A stranger cold-called him asking what it cost. He made a crazy number up on the spot. This is Ev Kontsevoy , co-founder of Teleport . Teleport was a free open-source tool he was giving away to generate leads for the real product his team had spent years building. People kept asking to buy Teleport instead. Most of those calls Ev turned away. He didn't want to be a support company. But one caller caught him off guard. Unknown number. Ev assumed spam and picked up annoyed. The guy wanted a small feature added. Basically a button. Five minutes of work for an engineer. Then he asked what it would cost. Ev had no price. No model. No benchmark. The caller was waiting. Watch him tell what happened next. It's the funniest pricing conversation I've heard in a while. It's also how Teleport Enterprise was born. That one accidental contract became the first SKU of a product that existed only as a footer link on the docs page. Teleport today serves over 500 companies at eight-figure ARR. They've raised $169 million. Most founders overthink their first price. Yours is going to be made up too. Ev's was, and the customer paid it.
