An international team using China’s Five‑hundred‑meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) has identified a binary star system as the source of repeating fast radio burst FRB 20220529, located about 2.3 billion light‑years away. The study observed a dramatic rotation‑measure flare, interpreted as a coronal mass ejection from the companion star interacting with a magnetar. This provides the first definitive evidence that at least some FRBs arise from magnetar–binary interactions rather than isolated objects. The discovery was published in Science on Jan. 15.
