The AI‑safety community is experimenting with large language models (LLMs) as tools for agent‑foundations research, but their utility is limited. LLMs function best as an enhanced search engine, surfacing known facts and occasionally stitching together simple, dense proofs or code snippets. When faced with genuinely novel theoretical work, they tend to generate plausible‑sounding but semantically empty text. Consequently, most researchers view AI‑assisted alignment as a supplementary aid rather than a primary discovery engine, while the broader agenda continues to produce papers on optimization, decision theory, and embedded agency.
