Meta’s Facial Recognition Smart Glasses Plan Sees Increasing Opposition

More than 60 civil‑society groups, led by the Consumer Federation of America, have written to Congress demanding a halt to Meta’s plan to embed facial‑recognition software, called “Name Tag,” in its Ray‑Ban smart glasses. The groups cite a Swedish investigation that found Meta subcontractors in Kenya were labeling video captured by the glasses—including bathroom visits, sexual activity and bank‑account details—and a 404 Media report that the LED recording indicator can be disabled. Senators have also pressed Meta for consent, bias testing and misuse safeguards, giving the company until April 6 to respond. The backlash arrives as Meta faces recent $375 million and $6 million judgments over its social platforms, intensifying regulatory scrutiny.
