To Phase Out Fossil Fuels, Developing Countries Need Exit Route From “Debt Trap”
A new report from the Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative warns that soaring external debt – now $8.9 trillion for low‑ and middle‑income nations – is trapping developing countries in a cycle where fossil‑fuel revenues are needed to service debt, while that same reliance fuels further borrowing. The analysis, released ahead of the First Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels in Colombia, shows that nations such as Colombia and Jordan must allocate up to 40% of government revenue to debt payments, leaving little fiscal space for renewable‑energy investments. The authors call for debt cancellation, green financing and reforms to multilateral lenders to break the lock‑in.
