Antiseptic-Tolerant Germs Spread Through the Air in Hospitals, Early Study Hints
A new study in Environmental Science & Technology found that chlorhexidine, a widely used hospital antiseptic, can persist on ICU surfaces for at least 24 hours, creating micro‑environments where bacteria develop tolerance. Researchers swabbed 219 samples in an Illinois ICU and discovered that 36% of the 1,400 isolates showed chlorhexidine tolerance, with sinks acting as hotspots. Laboratory tests revealed that tolerant strains often carry plasmids that also confer resistance to critical antibiotics such as carbapenems. While chlorhexidine remains effective at clinical concentrations, the findings raise concerns about long‑term antiseptic use and its role in accelerating antimicrobial resistance.
