Anatoly Doroshenko, a young scientist at Ukraine's Institute for Safety Problems of Nuclear Power Plants, regularly crawls into the shattered remains of Chernobyl’s Reactor 4 to record radiation levels. He can get as close as eight metres to the molten core and conducts these dangerous dives up to once a month. The work is performed under the protective New Safe Confinement structure that caps the original sarcophagus. His measurements provide the only direct data on the reactor’s interior conditions after more than four decades.
