When newspapers proliferated, contradictory reports created confusion, prompting The Gentleman’s Magazine to publish weekly round‑ups that compared and judged competing accounts—a practice Palmer calls “fact‑checking.” Palmer highlights material constraints: papyrus, brittle and suited to scrolls, and parchment, whose animal‑skin fibers showed wear and even holes that scribes worked around.
