Investors Will Ditch DIY Dashboards for Turnkey AI Agents
The Race for the Investor's Agentic Workspace I've been following the LLM tools space really since the launch of GPT 3.5 in November '22. I have two, perhaps controversial, beliefs. 1) For *most* non-developers, the time you have spent building custom dashboards in VSCode will be wasted motion. Over the next 3-12 months, vendors will build highly intuitive & capable GUIs (graphical user interfaces) over agentic capabilities, abstracting away much of the back end. The "hacker era" will end and the "workflow implementation" era will begin, and the tools will be shockingly good and shockingly easy to use. Investors should spend their time investing, not building tools, and as highly capable finance agents emerge at $5-$10k per seat, the math & ROI is going to be obvious for most investors to pull themselves out of the Claude Code & Open Claw rabbit hole and just become a client of the leading vendor (whoever that may be), using that tool to refocus on the craft of investing. 2) Finance Agent companies will win the workspace game. That doesn't mean that labs won't benefit from selling API/compute, of course (and demand for that feels like it will be almost unlimited). The labs are playing an unfair subsidization game right now vs. the wrappers right now selling $2k compute for $200, but that can't persist (particularly with IPOs looming). The agent harness matters *much* more than people discuss in finance use cases (to test this thesis, run a workflow in Claude Cowork w/ Opus 4.7, then run the same workflow in Perplexity Computer with Opus 4.7). The best finance chatbots were built by practitioners who understood the deep nuances of the craft (Portrait AI, Hudson Labs, Canary, etc), and this will be *even more* true in my opinion as Agents become even better at following instructions (not just a 6-page prompt but a 1,500 page buy-side research manual). Process will be the critical IP. The finance agents who can help clients clean & plug in data and customize and steer their agents with workflow context will turn the stateless agent into a truly agentic co-worker. Finance agent companies can just get to this earlier, with more domain expertise, and the average hedge fund / private equity firm is 5-35 seats. I've seen *pieces* of this possible with my experimentation with Perplexity Computer, and I've seen enough to believe that this is coming.
