Light‐Controlled Exposure/Blockage of Permanent Cavities in Metal‐Organic Cages‐Based Type II Porous Liquids
Researchers have created the first type II porous liquid whose permanent cavities can be exposed or blocked with light. By attaching azobenzene ligands to a charged metal‑organic cage (MSA) and dissolving it in the bulky ionic liquid P6,6,6,14Cl, they achieved a solution (PPL‑MSA) that adsorbs 9.9 cm³ g⁻¹ CO₂ at 25 °C and 1 bar—far surpassing previous type II liquids. UV‑induced trans‑to‑cis isomerisation drives the ionic liquid into the cage pores, cutting uptake by nearly half. The system shows a 49.3% reversible change in CO₂ capture, dwarfing the 7.6% shift of the host alone.
