Vortex Werewolf Targets Organizations With Tor-Enabled RDP, SMB, SFTP, and SSH Backdoors
Vortex Werewolf, also known as SkyCloak, is a threat cluster that has been delivering Tor‑enabled remote‑access backdoors to Russian government and defense organizations through sophisticated Telegram‑themed phishing campaigns. Victims are lured to counterfeit Telegram login pages that harvest phone numbers, verification codes, and cloud passwords before automatically dropping a malicious ZIP file. The payload installs a suite of tools—including a renamed OpenSSH server, a Tor hidden service, and an obfs4proxy—to expose RDP, SMB, SFTP and SSH over an obfuscated Tor tunnel, while employing sandbox checks and scheduled‑task persistence. The operation has been active since at least December 2024 and leverages GitHub Pages and Cloudflare for its infrastructure.
