Near-Frictionless Motion of Pico- to Nanoliter Droplets with Liquid-Repellent Particle Coating
Scientists at Japan’s MANA have created a liquid‑repellent particle coating that lets pico‑ and nanoliter droplets move with near‑zero friction. By spraying fluorocarbon‑modified fumed titania nanoparticles onto droplets, the team turned them into “micro liquid marbles” that slide via solid‑solid contact, requiring sub‑nanonewton forces. The method reduces the necessary repellent volume by three to four orders of magnitude while preserving the droplets’ ability to merge, split and reshape. This breakthrough opens pathways for ultra‑compact microfluidic devices, soft microrobotics, and reagent‑saving lab‑on‑a‑chip diagnostics.
