Polaris Spaceplanes has secured a contract from Germany’s Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In‑Service Support (BAAINBw) to develop and flight‑test a fully reusable, two‑stage hypersonic vehicle dubbed the Hypersonic Test and Experimentation Vehicle (HYTEV). The vehicle, roughly fighter‑jet sized, will combine turbofan‑powered horizontal take‑off with an in‑house aerospike rocket for boost, and an expendable upper stage capable of deploying small payloads to low‑Earth orbit. First flight is targeted for the end of 2027, with the Bundeswehr positioned as an anchor customer while private capital underwrites much of the development. A parallel single‑stage concept, Aurora, and an air‑to‑air missile‑armed AirLAS system are also progressing under separate German contracts.
