Bimanual versus Unimanual Capacity and Visuospatial Monitoring in Children with and without Unilateral Cerebral Palsy
Researchers compared upper‑limb motor capacity and visual monitoring during bimanual and unimanual tasks in children with unilateral cerebral palsy (uCP) and typically developing peers. Using a robotic exoskeleton with eye‑tracking, they found that bimanual tasks amplified arm asymmetry in the uCP group, with reduced contribution from the more affected limb. Gaze analysis revealed lower variability and a closer‑to‑body focus for children with uCP during bimanual activity, unlike the broader visual exploration of controls. The findings suggest that bimanual demands uniquely expose motor and visuomotor deficits in uCP.
