Climate Change Speeds up Destruction of Key Greenhouse Gas

Scientists at UC Irvine have found that climate change is speeding up the atmospheric destruction of nitrous oxide (N₂O), a potent greenhouse gas and ozone‑depleting substance. Satellite data from NASA’s Microwave Limb Sounder show the gas’s mean lifetime has fallen to about 117 years and is shortening by roughly 1.4 % per decade. This accelerated loss creates a new source of uncertainty in climate models, potentially offsetting the difference between high‑ and moderate‑emission pathways by the end of the century even without emission changes. The authors call for chemistry‑climate model upgrades to capture evolving stratospheric chemistry in future GWP and policy assessments.
