AI Cuts Sales Headcount, Supercharges Top Reps
GTM tools made the mid-pack reps more effective. That was the story from 2005-2024 or so. They created repeatability and efficiency so that 50%, 70%+ of your team could run the exact same playbook and at least hit quota. Many want to believe AI GTM Agents and tools will do the same. That they will make the average sales exec even better. Maybe. I hope so. So far, the evidence isn’t suggesting that’s the case. AI SDRs, while still early, can replace 90% of a routine email-based outbound team. Not just make those humans more efficient. What about AI AEs? That’s still very early. But what I’ve seen on SaaStr’s own little team, and SaaStr Fund portfolio companies, is that AI AEs and AI AE workflows allows fewer humans to make more money in sales. SaaStr itself is extreme. We are doing the same sales with 1.2 humans as we used to with 10. But I’ve seen it across my portfolio too. Make your Top 10%-20% AEs even more efficienct, even more effective, with AI ... and they can close radically more. And those are who will benefit I think with the AI sales tools of 2026-2027+. The top 10%-20% reps. The rest? We’ll still need to take bets, train new folks, etc. But if you aren’t in the Top 20% or so after a few months, you may not be needed. We’ll see.
