Novel Prediction Equations for Appendicular Skeletal Muscle Mass in Hemodialysis Patients: Referenced Against Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis
A cross‑sectional study of 111 maintenance hemodialysis patients found that three widely used anthropometric equations for estimating appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) performed poorly against multi‑frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Researchers created two dialysis‑specific models, an advanced height‑weight (HW) equation and a combined height‑weight‑circumference (HH) equation. The HH model achieved the highest adjusted R² (0.807) and the lowest root‑mean‑square error (2.63 kg), showing minimal bias and narrow limits of agreement. Internal validation confirmed the HH model’s stability across cross‑validation, bootstrap resampling, and ultrafiltration‑stratified analyses.
