Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) has been granted the U.S. Coast Guard’s Similarly Qualified Organization status under Title 46, placing it among only three classification societies authorized to serve the U.S. commercial fishing sector. The designation follows a four‑year technical review of IRS’s governance, quality systems, survey procedures and technical capabilities. With this status, IRS can conduct mandatory safety examinations, issue classification documents, and provide biennial compliance exams for fish processing vessels and tenders in the Aleutian trade. The move expands IRS’s service portfolio beyond its existing Authorized Class Society and Measurement Organization roles.
